Joe Maktima's real name is Willard. He was called "Wille Joe" as a child. Joe has been a professional painter and artist since 1990. He lives with his wife and son in Flagstaff, Arizona. Joe grew up watching his grandfather carve and paint katchina dolls, and on occasion he would accompany him on selling trips to various shops and collectors. His father also did some carving, but Joe remembers him most for the paintings he did on the kitchen table purely as a hobby.

His journey as an artist began by watching his two older brothers. Following high school he enrolled in the Institute of American Indain Arts, Santa Fe, New Mexico and majored in two dimensional design with an emphsis in painting and printmaking. Since graduating Joe has continued to explore many aspects of his own creaative process.

Subject matter for Maktimas work is rooted in the culture of his pueblo ancestry. Laguna Pueblo on his mother's side and Hopi on his father's side, his graphic designs are often influenced by the spiritual and literal tribal graphics. He says there are no bluebrints for what he does and he takes no shoortcuts to fulfill his compositions. Even a cursory examination of any of his paintings revelas a painstaking effort used to combine materials, isolate color, or to add texture. No other artist takes the time to stretch and prepare the canvas, to texturize, underpaint, mask the design, overpaint, guild and seal a canvas like Joe Maktima. One of the best painting values in our gallery. We invite you to scrutinize our offerings and to add one of his origionals to your collection.
